A Face in the Crowd

Do they go unnoticed?

Jakarta (Indonesia)

Jakarta (Indonesia) is my hometown. It is a city with 10.4 million people and 3.7 percent of them are living in poverty. Its nickname, the Big Durian, originated from a stinky fruit, a favorite fruit to many Jakartans. Some who haven’t tried durians might have hated it to the bone by dint of its stinky smell, but for those who have tried the fruit might have loved it and even get addicted to the fruit. In my analogy, Jakarta is truly a durian, its thorny outer skins are not easy to break to get into its delicious flesh.

It’s a hard life surviving the city.

  1. We got a glimpse into your hometown. A great essay using WP prompt! Well done!

They are not “just” a face in the crowd. You helped us be aware that these are real people who could use a little extra love.

    The fruit sounds interesting!

  2. I was in Jakarta one year ago and I was impressed about two men cleaning the river withouth any protection or equipment, the amount of garbage floating in the river was impressive.

  3. Actually I had no idea Jakarta is called the big Durian! Also didn’t know Indonesians liked Durian…and thought it was more popular with Malaysians 😆 Wonderful BW shots. The locals do come across as working hard for their living.

    • Thank you, Mabel! guess the fruit is extremely popular for people in South East Asia. I remember we had durian party every its season. It was just too many durians and bit insane I guess – we only ate durians throughout the party 😀
