Black Hills Treasure: Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake was a tranquil and incredibly beautiful lake. I have never seen a lake with unique rock formation like the Sylvan Lake before. Located in the Black Hills (South Dakota, USA), the lake is known as the ‘Crown Jewel of Custer State Park’.

The rock formation surrounding the lake was naturally formed, however, the lake itself was created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam and the first resort in the Black Hills.

There are plenty activities that you can do around the lake, from camping, kayaking to exploring the lake and its rock formation. We did let Dante, our dog, swimming in the lake and I can tell that he loved it!

It’s no surprises the lake was chosen as a movie’s location. Can you guess which movie it was? 😉

  1. Thanks for taking me to Sylvan Lake virtually Indah. The colors dancing on the lake are very inviting. And Dante looks like he is in doggy heaven. The Black Hills are high on my list of places to visit, even more so now with this post.

  2. This is a beautiful post, Indah. I can’t guess the movie? The fact that the rock formation was a gift from nature is fascinating. What a glorious swim for Dante! 🙂

    • Thank you! Hahaha. Dante had great time there and he refused to return to our car! The movie is National Treasure 2 in which the Mount Rushmore was also included 🙂

    • I love it too! It’s so nice that the Badlands National Park allowed dogs 🙂 I was traveling with Dante and I am sure you can bring along Choppy on your trip 😉

      • I’ve been out west with her a bit – I was always disappointed at how few national parks allow dogs. But now that I know Badlands allows them (and it’s not even that far from here!), I think Paul and I should plan another trip out that way!

  3. Am always so amazed how people like 135 years ago built things like dams without the equipment we have nowadays. Yet they did it Indah. It certainly would be a beautiful looking place to get away and enjoy nature. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  4. Sylvan Lakes, just looks amazing and I can fully appreciate the beauty and the bounty of rocks and lakes, as I stay in a place in India called Hyderabad which is known for it’s Deccan Plateau.

    Rocks make a fascinating landscape.
Rocks are an integral part of ecology.
Hyderabad is city of rocks and lakes.

The place was once home to over 2000 lakes and is now left with over 400 lakes.

The rock formation in this places is scientifically proven to be one of the oldest in the history of earth evolution.

These natural monuments offer picturesque beauty and come in various shapes and forms which are limited only by the onlooker’s imagination. They are indeed a natural wonder of stony ridges and hillocks shaped into picturesque balancing forms through millions of years of weathering and wearing.‘ There are names given to these non-animated objects in our nature which are animated and make us feel lively being with such objects in nature. The Bear’s Nose’, ‘Mushroom Rock’, ‘Cliff Rock’, ‘Monster Rock’, ‘Tortoise Rock’, ‘Obelisk’… are interesting names that have been given to these natural beauties.

Just like the Sylvan Lakes the wondrous rocks of Hyderabad and the Deccan have been silent witnesses to the history and changes to the environment that have taken place over the centuries.

Thanks Indah for sharing such a lovely post and making me reflect on the glory of rocks and lakes in my place.

    😀

    • It’s so unfortunate that the lakes are now disappeared 😦 I have seen the images of Hyderabad and looks like an amazing place that you live in. Thank you for your explanation, I hope someday I will be able to see them myself. t is my intention to visit India again ❤

      • Indeed Indah, it is really unfortunate that we are neglecting our historical heritage, natural beauty and so much offering by our surrounding and we just take it for granted.
Hyderabad is a lovely place and you have so much to explore and one can silently look back into the rich history of culture and monuments…you must visit and I am sure you will have a grand time here.
Yes, so much to see in India, one visit is never enough to satisfy our quest for exploration and learning the life and living in this part of the world.
        😀
