Black Hills Treasure: Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake was a tranquil and incredibly beautiful lake. I have never seen a lake with unique rock formation like the Sylvan Lake before. Located in the Black Hills (South Dakota, USA), the lake is known as the ‘Crown Jewel of Custer State Park’.

The rock formation surrounding the lake was naturally formed, however, the lake itself was created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam and the first resort in the Black Hills.

There are plenty activities that you can do around the lake, from camping, kayaking to exploring the lake and its rock formation. We did let Dante, our dog, swimming in the lake and I can tell that he loved it!

It’s no surprises the lake was chosen as a movie’s location. Can you guess which movie it was? 😉

  1. Bonjour Indah, tes photos sont magnifiques, quel bel endroit de tout repos. J’aime bien les oies sur l’eau 🙂
    Bisous ♥

      • I accidentally deleted your msg on my post. I was typing and not writing in this box and then something happened. Not sure what, I’m not techie. Thanks for the compliment. I was walking West point Foundry in Birkenstocks – not the smartest thing to do. All the rocks kept getting in my shoes but they were the most comfy shoes to wear while I had injured leg. Imagine suffering from travel ADD when you can’t leave the apartment for month. I caught up on the old classic Hitchcock movies like Rear Window and Vertigo.

  2. You dog is named Dante? I like that 🙂 The movie is called: “The day mister Floretin started his laundry service and forgot it was raining.’ It’s an rather unknown masterpiece by the Romanian director Ion Flaviescu, who realy had no idea of what he was doing but deperately wanted this lake into his movie.

    • Hi Peter, thank you! I get inspired to name my dogs based on writers or character in books. I almost name him after Stephen King or Tolkien. I had no idea about the movie though, but surely from the title, it won’t hurt to do some scenes at Sylvan Lake 😀
