Black Hills Treasure: Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake was a tranquil and incredibly beautiful lake. I have never seen a lake with unique rock formation like the Sylvan Lake before. Located in the Black Hills (South Dakota, USA), the lake is known as the ‘Crown Jewel of Custer State Park’.

The rock formation surrounding the lake was naturally formed, however, the lake itself was created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam and the first resort in the Black Hills.

There are plenty activities that you can do around the lake, from camping, kayaking to exploring the lake and its rock formation. We did let Dante, our dog, swimming in the lake and I can tell that he loved it!

It’s no surprises the lake was chosen as a movie’s location. Can you guess which movie it was? 😉

  1. Indah! Sylvan Lake, SD, very nice & never saw it before. I liked your last post on Kona with Pelagic marine life but could not find a box in which to comment on that one! I learned a great deal! Excellent teaching on your part with photos but also that chart or two!!! I guess you still live in the USA! Phil

    • Thank you so much, Phil! The USA has amazing nature, I hope I can visit all national parks in the USA 😀 😀 I turn off the comments section on the previous post, my apology! Hope you are having a wonderful Sunday!

  2. Sylvan Lake is gorgeous, I like the rock formations surrounding it. I didn’t recognize it even though I saw the movie (I looked it up, but won’t tell the secret). Beautiful place, Indah, thanks for sharing it.

    • It’s my pleasure to share the beauty of the Sylvan Lake..what a unique lake 🙂 I watched the movie again to see the scenes that capture the lake. The USA has amazing nature!

  3. Indah you are making me realize we have so much beauty and not that far from where we live. We have a Sylvan Lake near us but not with that kind of beauty. Would love to visit one day.
