World Oceans Day!
In 2008, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly was officially declared June 8th to be annually commemorated as the World Oceans Day. It’s about time, UN! And this year the theme is: Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet. What can’t be more important than having a healthy planet for us and the future generation?
Google Indonesia also celebrates the day by providing images of underwater street view from Karimun Jawa (Java) to Raja Ampat (West Papua) as you can view in Google Underwater Street View. Thanks to XL Catlin Seaview Survey, NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and Chagos Conservation Trust, for their cooperation with Google Indonesia, from now on we can enjoy Indonesia’s underwater view without getting wet.

Plastic as new “corals”, a vivid memory of my scuba diving
I wrote a post in early 2014 after learning how we have polluted our oceans with unused plastic products. I have witnessed some plastic wastes have become residents of our ocean. It’s sad and disturbing because they are the silent enemies to the native residents. Additionally, is our seafood free from plastic contamination? Below is the link the post, it is old but the topic is still relevant for today’s special event to support healthy oceans.
Oceans of Plastic Waste: When Humans Make the Waste that Nature Can’t Digest*
Have a wonderful World Oceans Day, and let’s save our seas 🙂
Thanks for the links Indah. Hopefully there becomes more awareness.
I hope so too Maverick! Thank you!
Amazing photos as usual, Indah. And your edits are also beautiful.
It is really sad that we are polluting the sea with plastic and other things. But these days marine pollution laws are very strict, even though people often find ways to bend it!
Thank you! Indeed, sometimes people just throw away things to the rivers or canals in spontaneous acts – and all these waters in the end will go to the seas 😦 It will take ages to change the habits..
True that.
Ahh, so today is world’s ocean day, I shall try to remember. I also find it sad to see pollution in the sea, especially when it can affect the marine lives…:(
I will remind it every year for you then 🙂 It is sad, and sometimes we need this kind of event to remind us of things that forgotten..one thing that worry me, all seafood that served nowadays may have contaminated by plastics – I saw fishes feed on plastics that covered with algae during my dives..
Thank you for an important and beautiful post, Indah.
My pleasure Hanna! Thank you so much for your support 🙂
I did not know that there is a World Ocean Day
It’s new as well.. – it was declared in 2008 but, the United Nations started to celebrate it in 2010. But I also think ocean is always being neglected in many ways, taken for granted by us or not a “sexy” topic on the news.. It is sad while its condition now is degrading.. 😦
True… We do take it for granted
Most days I walk along the foreshore with my dog. I use her “doggy do” bags to collect the plastic rubbish. It is never ending. Day after day the rubbish keeps washing up. It is so disheartening. Bags, bottles, cans, fishing line and plastic bottle lids are the main items I find.
You are so good! I hope many will follow your leads. It is really unfortunate with the condition of our beach or river nowadays. I just don’t understand why it is so difficult to throw the waste on the garbage bins..
Food for thought indeed. I wish we would learn and change our ways..we seem to destroy everything we touch. I have grown up in the most polluted countries in the world and everything cannot be blamed on the government or the population. If each one of us does even a little bit, the world and the eco system, would be a better place.
You put it very well! I agree, it should start from us to improve the world to be a better place!
Plastic onshore is the same story. People just throw them out, maybe hoping someone will pick their trash. It’s sad.
I agree, it is sad, it seems it is difficult to change the bad habit 😦
