5-Day Mexican Breakfasts

It was six years ago when we visited Mexico for the first time. We are going to visit the country again, although it will be different places, still in Quintana Roo state. I read my travel journal again back in the year 2010; it’s funny how I wrote down all the names of the breakfast meal we had during our five days in Playa Del Carmen. It was my first journey tasting the Mexican food – we still lived in the Netherlands by then, and the cuisine was not as widespread as in the United States.  I don’t have all pictures of my breakfast; thus some pictures are images from under Creative Commons (click image for the original source).

First Day: Sopes

It looks like a small and thicker tortilla. It is stuffed with any fillings you wished then fried or baked. I had vegetarian sopes filled with beans, jalapeno, and cheese. Non-vegetarian sopes had chorizo adds-on. Yum!

Second Day: Tamale

This food was so delicious but I bet it contained lots of sugar even the savory one! Tamale is a steamed cornstarch dough filled with any stuffings you wished for. It could be savory or sweet and covered with corn husk. I learned later on that this food is also a typical street food in Mexico and as well in other countries in South America.

Third Day: Omelet Poblano

Poblano is chili pepper originated from Puebla state in Mexico. I had the omelet with Poblano sauce mixed with black beans and mushrooms, while Dutchie got the non-vegetarian version with chorizo. Although the sauce was made from chili pepper, the poblano sauce was not too spicy.

Fourth Day: Quesadillas

Quesadilla is a warm tortilla, made from corn or wheat  that can be folded and filled with Oaxaca cheese. It is a simple meal but fulfilling and is best to eat when it is warm!



Fifth Day: Huevos Rancheros

This is a classic Mexican breakfast, fried eggs served on corn tortillas with salsa sauce and beans. It is a heavy breakfast and could last until late afternoon!

I am excited to visit Mexico again and this time, we will visit Cancun and Tulum then continue to Belize. I hope to explore more of the Mexican cuisine. Do you have recommendations of which Mexican food to try? The spicier, the better!


  1. I do love Mexican food. and the spices found in it. I must learn how to properly prepare it, as there are no local Mexican restaurants that I am aware of.
