Surfing in Costa Rica

It comes to my surprise that Costa Rica is also a surfing destination. Surfing locations in Costa Rica are mostly in the Pacific Coast area. Tamarindo Beach and some areas like in Quepos and Jacó have excellent waves to surf. But these places are often busy with beach-goers as well. Thus, the surfers have to watch their moves. We also visited the beach of Hacienda Baru in Dominical; the beach was empty with excellent waves, I am not sure why no one were on the beach. Surfing season in Costa Rica is from February to July but, in general, it is possible to surf all year round. The waves were not as high as I have seen in Bali (Indonesia), but for sure, that makes it a perfect place to learn how to surfing!

  1. I would have never thought to show these images in black and white. Well Done! I love them. I have never surfed… but I think I will try paddle surfing. or is it called paddle boating…??

    • Costa Rica is unique country, Mallee. I am sure you will enjoy their forests and beaches..it’s just the country is way warmer than Asia during the day – or maybe I could not handle the heat anymore 😀

  2. I would love to learn how to surf. Maybe next time I am in Hawaii – or I could just make a trip to learn how to surf somewhere else (which is maybe a good idea, considering how big the waves are in Hawaii).

    • The waves in Costa Rica were quite low, but strong enough to surf…I saw plenty of beachgoers who in the end tried to surf – it was fun to see 😀 I wish I tried it too! Maybe there is some part of beaches in Hawaii that allows new surfers to learn. Personally I would not dare to surf in high waves 🙂

      • I will definitely be sticking to the small ones when I learn! I did see plenty of beaches with what looked like manageable waves while we were there, so I think it’s just a matter of finding the right person to teach me at one of those places.
