Markthal Rotterdam
It is claimed to be the first indoor market in the Netherlands and after seeing it myself, I can say it is a spectacular one!
The construction started in 2009 and finally, the Markthal Rotterdam opened on the first October 2014, inaugurated by Dutch Queen Maxima. It is a popular place in the Netherlands at this moment. I was there a couple weeks ago and we did not get any place to dine as all restaurants and bars were full.
Markthal Rotterdam is an indoor food market, and yes, it is inspired by the indoor markets in Barcelona, Valencia and Stockholm. The building is designed by Rotterdam architects Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. Its outside arch constructed for 228 apartments with view to inside of the markets and outside. The market has 96 units for fresh food and beverages plus 20 hospitality or retails units. Additionally it has underground car park with 1,200 parking lots and don’t worry, the parking fee in Rotterdam is way cheaper than Amsterdam.
One thing that strikes me is the painting artwork by Arno Coenen with co-partner Iris Roskam that called “Hoorn des Overvloeds” (The Horn of plenty) on its inside archway. Simply stunning and huge! It was claimed as the biggest artwork in the Netherlands: 11,000 meter square with 4500 panels.
Inside of the market, we can find good quality food products plus plus: there are favorite stuffs the Dutch likes such as cheese and flowers; also fresh vegetables, fruits, meats and seafood. The dogs are allowed to enter the market.
Besides of shopping, you can have a nice hot drinks in one of the café or having wine in a wine bar. There are some restaurants inside where you can eat at their “roof terraces” and enjoying the artwork by Coenen.

Wow pictures. Is it a fish eye lens or ultra wide?
Thank you!! I used fish-eye lens for the images. I did not use tripod and the result is quite impressive..I am in love with fish eye lens! 😀 😀
Yes. It is very beautiful. 🙂 You said you didn’t use tripod, it made me think. What if you apply a bit of zoom blur using this lens?! 😀
oh..it can’t 😦 a prime lens it is, there is no option to zoom in or out..
oh.. its a prime lens! Have fun anyway 😀
wow… what an amazing construction, so futuristic and so colorful and warm at the same time.. and your photos certainly do it credit, Indah… !!!
would definitely go for shopping there some day 🙂 🙂
Thank you so much Alexandra! 🙂
What an amazing building and indoor market. Love how all the panels have been carefully crafted to create those bigger patterns. It’s as if when you’re shopping, you are also walking through an art gallery at the same time 😀 This is a very clean indoor market, wow. Not even the indoor markets and groceries stores in Melbourne is this attractive 🙂
That’s true Mabel! It feels like walking inside an art gallery! I guess Europeans try to accommodate their people markets to be more artistic to invite people to keep coming and buy from the local farmers and independent shops..there are too many chains supermarkets nowadays so by providing such interesting place hopefully that will help the smaller enterprises 🙂
There you go again, teasing me with your fisheye 🙂 Beautiful looking market, made so by your incredible photos and description. Cheers to a great weekend!
😀 😀 Christmas is coming!! (PS: I didn’t use tripod for these images and quite surprise that the results are still fine). Thanks Randall and have a great weekend to you too!
Funny you mention the tripod story ~ your shots were great without one, which gives me hope!
Just did shoot in the Philippines, and brought my tripod for a specific pre-dawn hike ~ and that morning I realized I left my tripod in the van so shot that morning w/o a tripod… I definitely shot differently, took shots I perhaps would not have taken with the tripod, but haven’t really looked at the photos yet…just hoping I will be happy with the results 🙂
Oh, such misfortunes happened but fingers crossed that your images are fine..knowing your images quality I am sure you have a way to make your camera stabilizes.. 😉
Are you still in the Philippines? Hope all is well there and be safe – I read the news about the typhoon..and btw, I am going to the Philippines as well this month 😀 what a coincidence!
With high ISO, the shots turned out OK…you are right, with the will, there is a way 🙂 It would have been great to have been in the Philippines when you are there. Are you diving? I’m in HK and off to the States early next week. Safe travels!
Hi Randall, yes, it will be a diving holiday 🙂 Safe travels to you too and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year celebration. Looking forward to read your next post.
that is fantastic 🙂
Thank you so much Joshi! 🙂
Again, wow! I’ve always had a keen interest to visit this city (and Europe)…maybe someday 😉
Have a perfect weekend!
