Markthal Rotterdam

It is claimed to be the first indoor market in the Netherlands and after seeing it myself, I can say it is a spectacular one!

The construction started in 2009 and finally, the Markthal Rotterdam opened on the first October 2014, inaugurated by Dutch Queen Maxima. It is a popular place in the Netherlands at this moment. I was there a couple weeks ago and we did not get any place to dine as all restaurants and bars were full.

Markthal Rotterdam is an indoor food market, and yes, it is inspired by the indoor markets in Barcelona, Valencia and Stockholm. The building is designed by Rotterdam architects Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. Its outside arch constructed for 228 apartments with view to inside of the markets and outside. The market has 96 units for fresh food and beverages plus 20 hospitality or retails units. Additionally it has underground car park with 1,200 parking lots and don’t worry, the parking fee in Rotterdam is way cheaper than Amsterdam.

One thing that strikes me is the painting artwork by Arno Coenen with co-partner Iris Roskam that called “Hoorn des Overvloeds” (The Horn of plenty) on its inside archway. Simply stunning and huge! It was claimed as the biggest artwork in the Netherlands: 11,000 meter square with 4500 panels.

Inside of the market, we can find good quality food products plus plus: there are favorite stuffs the Dutch likes such as cheese and flowers; also fresh vegetables, fruits, meats and seafood. The dogs are allowed to enter the market.

Besides of shopping, you can have a nice hot drinks in one of the café or having wine in a wine bar. There are some restaurants inside where you can eat at their “roof terraces” and enjoying the artwork by Coenen.

  1. WOW, it is stunning!!! You didn’t find any place to eat? Ohh God, I guess now during winter must be even harder right? I find it such a great idea to do an indoor market like this one… I didnt know there was one in Stockholm, if only I knew before 😀

    • Thank you so much Allane! We went there during the weekend – it’s just crazy in Rotterdam on the weekend, mostly (good) and hip places are packed! I hope by winter now it is less people! I have never been to the market in Stockholm either..now I am wondering myself 😀

      • You’re welcome Indah 😀
It does look amazing, and I also wonder how it must be like in Stockholm!!
By the way, I thought of you today… I heard on the radio that there might be a Typhoon happening in the Philippines soon and remembered that you told you are going there soon! I hope it doesnt interfere with your travel plans!! 😦

        • Hi Allane…thank you for your concern! Yes, we have heard about the news and keep monitoring it..usually the typhoon came around November but this time bit later 😦 fingers crossed it will be over soon for the sake of people in the Philippines, it will be awful Christmas for them 😦 In any worse case happens, I guess we can just stay in Singapore and fly somewhere else (we also combine our trip with staying over in Singapore). One thing I know, the area that we will visit is not affected by the typhoon.

          • I know, very sad 😦 whenever they get back on their feet it comes all over again! I hope it passes fast and no severe damage is done!
Ohh perfect, if you are going to Singapore then from there you can fly to many amazing places around 🙂
Either ways I hope it wont be necessary and that you go to the Philippines and enjoy your time there 😀 how exciting you trip sounds!!

            • Thank you so much for your sweet wishes!! ❤
Yes, we visited Singapore in early January already but this time we will stay longer in S'pore to meet friends and family. It is still okay if we have to change our holiday plan, but of course we hope that we don't have to! 😉
I just received an update that the areas that we are going to visit were not badly affected by the typhoon and the typhoon now is downgraded as tropical storm..so hopefully it will be over soon!

              • No need to thank me 😀 I always wish you well!

Ohhh that sounds really nice… I am very excited to finally visit Singapore next year!!

And thank God things are better in the Philippines… hopefully it will all be over soon and you will have an amazing time there! 😀
