Romance in Rotterdam

From the deck of SS Rotterdam

Who could think a port city like Rotterdam as a romantic city? Apart from its modern architectures, Rotterdam does not offer many old historical buildings or canals like Paris or Amsterdam. Steam Ship (SS) Rotterdam, however, has given the romantic feeling to the city. The ship, also known as “The Grande Dame” was built in Rotterdam and inaugurated in 1958 by Dutch Queen Juliana. It crossed many seas, and finally it returned home in year 2008 to be permanently docked.

In year 2010, SS Rotterdam opened its door for visitors who wish to know its legend, or to dine and sleep in a legendary cruise steam ship. Located in Katendrecht, peninsula of Rotterdam that was known as a lousy neighborhood to live in, the ship was docked with a hope it would bring positive influence to the neighborhood. Millions euro spent for its renovation along aside with the improvement of the neighborhood. The present Katendrecht is promising. It is a safe place to live in and to be. Katendrecht has changed, and without doubt the ship has strong influence to the neighborhood. The Grande Dame makes the peninsula of Rotterdam a romantic place at night.

Pictures were taken in SS Rotterdam, Katendrecht (Rotterdam).

  1. I love your monochrome monday photos – both with differing romantic feels – one of new love – the other of more mature and maybe a seasoned love (just my impression) and how cool that this docked ship helped revitalize the hood – along with millions of $$ – well that is cool when it happens to certain parts of town. 🙂 happy Monday

    • Thank you so much Yvette! Great interpretation! ❤ ❤
It's quite unique and surprisingly some retirees who live in Katendrecht used to work on the ship back then!

  4. Ah, it looks like the romantic period of the 1940’s, when men and women always looked elegant. I sometimes wish that I lived during that time.
