The Colonnades of the Vatican

Vatican City

St. Peter’s Square (Vatican City) is surrounded by semi-round colonnades. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, each side of the colonnades consists of four rows of columns with total of 284 columns. Additionally, Bernini placed 140 statues of religious people on top of the colonnades. I did not count it myself but I was tempted to take picture of each statue. The two colonnades were geometrically designed to resemble two arms that embrace the crowds in the square.

Too many photos of the colonnades are available online, so I thought to take a photo with different perspective. Yes, I was queuing when taking the picture, it was a long wait and I learned a lesson to start early when visiting famous landmark 😉

  1. Yes, it is definitely a different perspective. Also it is true that early bird gets the worm 😀 Start early to avoid the crowd 😀

  2. Beautiful photos… really enjoyed seeing the different perspective. Yes, that queue is long isn’t it?! And for some reason there are always these ‘extra-smart’ people who won’t go to the end of the line but try to sneak in between.

    • Thank you so much Kan! Indeed, it was quite brutal line 😀 I wonder what it looks like during the summer (I was there on the fall and thought it must be less people but not!)..

  3. I agree with the comments prior to mine – the perspective is wonderful! I have not been in Italy since my youth, and look forward to visiting it again one day. On my list Trieste, and Vatican City.
